About rice

The story behind every grain

Once the paddy is harvested it follows three main paths — raw milling, parboiling, or steaming — before reaching markets worldwide.

A staple that feeds the world

This wonderfully versatile foundation provides one-fifth of all calories consumed by people worldwide.

Between 3 and 5 months after planting, the paddy is harvested, dried and sent to mills where it is checked for quality and weight before processing. About 500 million tons of rice are grown worldwide each year, with Asia accounting for 90% of production — across more than 40,000 different varieties.
